Product Assurance - Our
Promise to You
We confirm that polypropylene film is not
toxic and is internationally approved for direct contact with food.
We guarantee that our polypropylene films
comply with all current EU Directives (namely 94/62, 97/48, 02/72,
04/19) and UK legislation (Statutory Instruments 2006/1401, 2004/1188)
relating to packaging which comes into direct contact with food.
The level of migration has been measured
according to the rules specified in Directive 94/48/EC Chapter 1
- Food Simulants, paragraph 2.1 and Chapter 2 - Migration test conditions
as in paragraph 2.1 (simulants A, B and C) and 2.2. NB: In accordance
with EU Directive 2002/72/EC and amendments, the migration should
be measured on the finished packs using the actual foodstuffs or
appropriate food simulants at the real food/temperature conditions
of use, according to the rules specified in EU directives 97/48/EC
We also confirm that films supplied by Protos Packaging do not contain
any of the heavy metals, namely lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavelent
chromium, detailed in the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations

We purchase our raw material from recognised companies
who can demonstrate that their films are suitable for direct contact
with food and conform with the above legislation. We also request
that they have or are working towards BRC/IOP accreditation. We
maintain full traceability of raw materia from receipt at our plant
through all production processes and delivery to our customers.
Protos Packaging Limited has a Quality Manual
with a comprehensive set of Work Instructions for all process and
administrative systems, copies of which are available on request.
The Environment
Polypropylene film is manufactured without the
use of harmful chemicals or solvents. There is no discharge waste
or toxic by-products to cause secondary pollution. Polypropylene
film is recyclable and can be used in the manufacture of other products.
Polypropylene is a stable material which can be used in landfill.
After degradation it will not produce harmful waste. Polypropylene
is beneficial when incinerated. When burnt it generates twice the
energy of coal and is converted into harmless carbon dioxide and
water vapour.
Material Safety Handling
To optimise the safe handling of polypropylene
film, we recommend the following safety guidelines:
• Ventilate
adequately when heat sealing
• Do not inhale fumes
• Keep molten polymer away from
skin, clothing or combustible material
• Allow heat seal areas to cool
before handling
• Polypropylene slabs are slippery
underfoot. Maintain good housekeeping practices
BRC/IOP Food Packaging Standard
UK Retailers and their suppliers of retail branded
products must take "all reasonable precautions and exercise
all due diligence" in the development, manufacture, distribution,
advertising or sale of food products to the consumer. Suppliers
of packaging to UK retailers, or food manufacturers providing retailer
branded products, have an obligation to put appropriate systems
and controls in place to ensure the suitability of their packaging
for safe food use.
The British Retail Consortium and Institute of
Packaging have combined to produce a Technical Standard for companies
manufacturing and supplying food packaging materials for retailer
branded products. The Standard was published in October 2001.
Companies who comply to the Standard will demonstrate
that they have implemented a satisfactory hygiene management system
and established a quality management system and relevant process
control procedures.
At PROTOS we use the Standard as a framework for
all our operating procedures. We welcome visits by customers to
our process and warehouse facilities so that they may evaluate our
standards of hygiene and housekeeping. We are also happy to supply
copies of our Work Instructions and policies relating to our operational
procedures. |
